Ecopoly is an exercise in sustainability, decision making and systems thinking. It illustrates how decisions about finite resources can have long-lasting implications for everyone, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach. This tool includes three different staging scenarios to bring this abstract concept to life.

The goal of this activity is to create awareness about resource usage. There are three unique ways to stage Ecopoly, allowing you to use the tool with a variety of groups for a range of learning objectives. They are:

OVERFISHING – THE COST OF THE CATCH
How will fishing boats meet the demands of today without jeopardizing the seas of tomorrow?

THREE PLANETS – A LESSON OF COSMIC PROPORTIONS
How will alien civilizations collaborate to avoid cosmic collapse?

THE BOTTOM LINE – MAXIMIZING THE WHOLE
How will departments expand their budgets without bankrupting the business?

Once you select the staging scenario (or create your own context-specific scenario), you divide your group into three teams (of fishing fleets, aliens or managers) who are then challenged to maximize their amount of a scarce resource (fish, a precious gas or budget funds).

To do this, the teams request their desired amount from you over several rounds. Participants often begin by stockpiling resources without considering long-term consequences. Although they know the resource is limited, they typically fail to manage it carefully. Instead, they request too much over too many rounds, inadvertently causing the system to stop regenerating the resource, and everyone loses access to it.

If teams begin to act with foresight and take a holistic view of their situation, however, they can coordinate their actions to keep the resources in circulation for far longer. They may even be able to move from scarcity to abundance.
